So the wars have begun again. Mozilla released its third beta of firefox3.1. With the anticipation of IE8, Safari 4, Chrome, & Opera 10, Mozilla is deep in the middle battle.

It seems that one of the biggest battle grounds of this war is over speed. I tried the beta 2 of FF and didn’t really notice any speed differences. Though this is from my eeepc (with the old celeron, not even the newer atom processor) so that could be the biggest bottleneck right there.

I’m a sucker for shiny new things, so I have already downloaded the FF 3.1b3. I hear development on chrome for linux is moving quickly, that will be nice to try out too. If I’m impressed with the new beta, I might write some more about it.

Until recently I had been doing all my web design editing on my ubuntu laptop at home. I didn’t really think about the likely story that Internet Explorer would have issues with rendering the stuff I was doing.

I wish I would of grabbed a screen shot of the madness that IE created with FUMCclass.com. The paragraphs were invisible, the headers we sized so big that just a few letters were filling up the whole screen, not to mention problems with the sidebar & footer. It took me about 10 hours total spanning over two days to get most everything lined out. There are still parts that I need to look into.

The trouble with having ubuntu is that I can’t debug in IE. The other day I came to the great idea of using wine. Well trying to do it with wine is very difficult but luckily someone has made it easy; in the form of IEs4Linux. The install is pretty easy, with a gui; though it seemed to be kind of buggie. It hung on the first install, so I had to try again.

IE7 support is still in beta, but from my testing I couldn’t get it to work. It would open though I could never get a page to pull up with it. I didn’t spend much time with it though, so it could of been an error on my part. I was able to get IE6 (and I didn’t try 5.5 or 5) running. Though definitely not stable enough to do anything important, it should be helpful in the future for web development.

Though Chick makes into looking like a parody; there could be trouble for the Catholic church, possibly indulgences coming back into vouge.

The post was specifically about google docs and a one line of css to save 25px. Athough you can edit css for any site.

I was able to save about 30px just between the search box and the content below on gmail. Gmail is a very complex site, so many different divs; it was very hard to figure out what to change, even with the enormous aid of firebug.

Here is the CSS code to gain the desired results:

/*take out google logo on google docs*/
#logo-section {display:none;}
/*gain space on gmail around search box & logo*/
.IY0d9c {height: 44px;}
.zYsCRb {height: 44px !important;}

I should probably figure out how to limit the css only to certain websites, or I could end up with some weird outcomes.

I found these helpful hints on “GNOME Human Interface Guidelines 2.2″1:

Sensitivity to cultural and political issues is also an important consideration. Designing icons and sounds, and even choosing colors requires some understanding of the connotations they might have to a user from a different part of the world.

Examples of elements it is best to avoid for these reasons include:

* Pictures of flags or money

* Maps showing political boundaries or contentious location names

* Lists of countries or cities in non-alphabetical order (unless specifically requested or required by the context)

* Icons depicting animals

* Icons depicting only hands or feet

I think the last bullet is rather ironic since GNOME’s logo is a foot. I can understand what they were getting at with the first few bullets but the last two. What is the danger in depicting animals in icons?

I couldn’t help but point this out. Typically religious conversatives are anti-homosexual and anti-immigration. Thankfully enough the Israelites were already given laws by God in how to deal with both of these issues. The aforementioned group has already found the laws concerning what my Bible calls the “unlawful sexual relations”, at the end of a long list of prohibitions against incest there is short description stating, “do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.” The language is different than what is used earlier of wickedness. The summary shortly after the statement is question uses the language of defilement, you end up defiling the land which will vomit you (you being the collective whole) out. So the question of right or wrong seems clear, but this verse is in the middle of a lot of other laws which we are very poor in keeping also. How well are any of us in keeping the Law; Paul has already spent time describing that failed endeavor. On the next page it states:

“When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

This seems like a clear call to accept whomever comes as if they were born here. Even if the Church can’t change the legislation on this issue(though it definitely can put a lot of pressure) it seems that we need to be the most welcoming place for a illegal immigrant to come. It is so frustrating that we can miss God so often on issues of ideologies or policy. When people use the Bible as a tool to use in their fight they are misusing the name of the Lord; which again is commanded against, this time being a matter of higher importance being that it is in the top ten list. So what are we supposed to do about all this? Jesus summed it up really well, Love God & Love People. If we aren’t loving people then it doesn’t matter how many sins we can point out in the Other. The blame that God gives to the people about the sexual conduct seems to be centered on the community, not the individual so much. If we create a community where people don’t understand Love & love then immorality is going to be played out in numerous ways. We shouldn’t be accusing the Other for the problems of the land; the blame should be riding on [each of] our shoulders. We our responsible for our contribution to the misconstruing of Love & how that is played out in all its forms, from sexuality immortality to immigration.

There is a beta for download for those of us who can’t wait the few weeks more. It doesn’t seem to be a huge update, but does include some updated key components, their listed highlights are: GNOME 2.24, X.Org 7.4, Linux kernel 2.6.27, Encrypted private directory, Guest session, Network Manager 0.7, “Last successful boot” recovery entry, Samba 3.2, and couple of others that I have skipped over.

But I wonder if I will even notice a difference…

We bought a video camera little while back. I have been dragging my feet about getting a video editing ‘setup’—it is a dv camera so I need firewire to transfer plus the software to capture and edit. I’ve done some editing, but it has been a few years now. I woud expect everything to be very different than it was then. I tried out a few different software packages before, I settled down with Vegas (which was version 4.0, i believe back then, they are now on version 8.0 apparently).

This time around I’m a lot more entrenched into the open-source linux as my operating system world. Before, my laptop’s wifi couldn’t work in linux so that pretty much made it useless to me–so I never explored it very deeply. From my understanding Apple’s Final Cut is the way to go for professional editing & also their Final Cut Express is a good option for the average user. Instead of simply exploiting m$ and other exploitative software corporations, I have moved towards a more liberating legal way of computing. Sadly it seems that Linux is somewhat behind on development of viable open source video editing options, although there are a few options out there.

I know Jake has recently talked about trying out Ubuntu Studio. That seems like an easy way to go. I just wonder how much extra stuff it will install which I will never use. It will be running a desktop with plenty of hard drive, so the size isn’t the issue, but it just seems excessive for what I’ll be needing. But by reading their aim, it definitely helps me to see the benefits of it, from their wiki site:

Our aim is to make it more accessible for new users to get into the tools that GNU/Linux has to offer for multimedia creation and production. We also want to spotlight what’s out there, and show users tools they might not know to exist.

It seems like a good attempt for them to try to break into that design mac-centered world, with open-source. I know all those adobe hating adobe using folks out there would like to see the light.

In my initial searching, which I am still in, two names keep popping up: Kino & Cinerella. I just got my firewire pci adapter in today, since for some reason manufactures hate putting firewire ports on their boards except for the select models. I haven’t put it in yet, supposedly it should be pretty much plug n play with ubuntu 8.04. But after that task I will definitely be trying out at Kino & Cinerella, maybe Ubuntu Studio—I wonder if I could just apt-get install ubuntu-studio, without to do a compete reinstall.

Well I finally took the time to setup a server for wordpress for myself. I haven’t messed with the style yet but it is up & running. Here is the address hiddenbehindnothing.thruhere.net
I am using DynDNS for a reroute to IP.
More to come.

Update:
I have fixed my server problems–I installed ubuntu server 8.04 with LAMP & xubuntu desktop (for my ease of use). It seems to be running a lot better than it was before. The website it definitely loading a lot faster than it was. I have put a simply view on it for at least now. I like the simple interface but I would like something slightly different. The only thing I need to do now is install a FTP server to allow remote file access.

Updated:
I didn’t realize that the webserver wasn’t working from without the intra-network. There were some other issues that I was coming across previously which I have resolved (I think) unrelated to this problem. I have tried numerous things: I’m sure I have port forwarding configed correctly, I ‘think’ I configed apache2 for external users since it is default only localhost. Any suggestions anyone?
