hebrews 1:1-14

This week we will get to straight into the text of Hebrews. These first few chapters of Hebrews are laying out a foundation of who Jesus Christ is. It is important for us to know deeply who Christ is because for the last two thousand years people have been trying to redefine his character. Even during Christ’s ministry there were plenty of theories of who he was. Christ turned that question to Peter, as also to us, “but, who do you say that I am?” (matthew 16:13-20)

Discussion Question

  • (a) So what do people today say about Jesus?
Conversely, who do you say that he is?
Describe your understanding of who Christ is.
  • (b) Why do you think, the author’s first argument concerns angels?
  • (c) Verses 1-4 are the prologue; they give us a glimpse into everything which lays before us. Spend some time trying to tally all the claims that are made in this very short section.

One Response

  1. Jonathan writes:

    (a) Today I think most people see Jesus in a good light and can appreciate the good that he did while he was here on earth. Unfortunately the number of people who believe in His divinity and His resurrection is dwindling.
I hope that most of the time my life shows the grace and unconditional love that God has shown to me through His son Jesus.
Christ has changed me and brought peace and purpose to a life filled with pride and confusion. He is the one I model my life after.

(b)This is a tough one. In addition to our discussion on Sunday, I wonder if the prevalence of first-person post-resurrection encounters with Jesus painted the idea of Him being angelic rather than human. Check out Luke 24. That could lead many to think “angel.” Just a thought.

(c)I am drawn again and again to the words “exact representation.” That is something that my mind keeps going back to. I should memorize these four verses… anyone what to try that with me?
