They are filled with the gold standard of interpretations not the latest fad or attempt to reach a 'market share'. But go try to find a new Bible that isn't like that, the best bet is the used book store for something pre 1970s. He looked at it with this really odd expression: "What's all this other stuff?" "Um, it's just commentary--it explains difficult stuff..." He was definitely troubled. (Shortly after that I learned about the long history of commentaries on the Torah that surrounded the Scripture text in much the same way.
