consuming advent

Tim Keel {of Jacob’s Well in KC,MO} has recently posted on advent and what his church is doing to create a more conscious community about the religious and spiritual importances of this time of year. He shares about a great event they are doing this Friday. He wants to make it a time of {spiritual} preparation, just as Ash Wednesday is preparatory for Lent. Ash Wednesday is over looked to many from the shadow of Mardi Gras; just as Black Friday will attempt to over shadow his attempt; even I don’t think he speaks of this connection, it seems really interesting. If I could ever understand the reactionary nature of theological creation, it would be this, creating traditions which try to change the current trends of culture.

The post is titled “An Alternative to Black Friday“, He thens leads with a beautiful picture of his sanctuary—an absolutely powerful message in-itself. He then takes the rest of the post to mead of everything which seems to be already encapsulated within the title-image combination. It is worth a look.

Previously he posted a promotion video from adventconspiracy.org; it is pretty good stuff. I think I might like to play this for my church class on Sunday. We are studying the book The Trouble With Paris which highlights the problem of consumerism/individualism within the church community. A little searching finds that they have {free} resources available for download on their site. I’m sure glad they didn’t point me to some page to sell me a dvd—I would of then been ‘forced’ into figuring out how to download youtube content.
